5th J-PAS Collaboration Meeting - Astronomy Department, IAG-USP

We invite all J-PAS members to the 5th J-PAS Collaboration Meeting. The 5th Meeting will take place at the Astronomy Department of IAG - the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics And Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Sao Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil).

About São Paulo

São Paulo is the largest city of both South America and Brazil and 7th biggest in the world. Located in the southeastern part of the country on the Tiete River, about 55 km (35 mi) inland from SANTOS, Brazil's principal port, São Paulo is the country's leading manufacturing and financial center.

Founded by Jesuits in 1554, São Paulo served during the 17th and 18th centuries as a base for Portuguese settlement of the interior. In the 1880s, São Paulo state became a major coffee-growing region. Later on, the income from coffee exports and the increasing population provided capital and manpower for the foundation of an industrial base. Today it is the industrial and financial center of Brasil generating over 15% of the Brazillian GNP.

Hotel information

São Paulo has hundreds of hotels on all price ranges, but transportation can be a nuisance, since public transport is not very widespread.

We have entered in agreement with two hotels which are both conveniently located, and in nice areas with plenty of choices for food and fun. If you choose a different hotel, please verify that transportation to/from the University is not too complicated.

The two recommended hotels (below) have both wi-fi and cabled internet, as well as breakfast, included in the rates. Please contact these hotels and make reservations by yourself.

  • This hotel is closest to Vila Madalena, with lots of restaurants, cafés, bars, bookstores etc. It is right next to a main street served by several bus lines that go to the University, as well as within walking distance to the Metro.

2. Hotel L'Opera

  • R$ 199 + 5% tax (single)
  • This hotel is only a few blocks away from Vila Madalena, and there are many good restaurants nearby as well. It is close to several bus lines that can take you into the University, and is just a few block away from the Metro.

Also marked in this map (the stars) are just a few of the hundreds of options for food, drinks, etc. The area around R. Aspicuelta (upper part of the map) has scores of bars, and a few good restaurants. There is also a cluster of restaurants and bars around the corner of Av. Brig. Faria Lima and Av. Pedroso de Morais (upper left corner), including one of São Paulo's best pizzarias (Bráz).

Transportation & Travel Information

Transportation to/from Guarulhos International Airport (GRU)

After arriving at the airport, you can either take a taxi (which will cost you approximately R$ 150), or you can take the Airport Bus Service. This is a a very comfortable bus that drops you off at a location near your hotel. You have two options with the Airport Bus Service:

  1. Take the "Itaim-Bibi" line until the final stop.Your hotel is then a short taxi ride away.
  2. Take the "Hotels Circuit" line and step off at one of the Metro stations near Avenida Paulista. Then, take the Metro to the Faria Lima station (Yellow Line; if you stop at the Paulista or Consolação stations, you don't even have to change lines). The hotels are both a short walk (2-3 blocks) from the Faria Lima Metro station.

Transportation between the hotels and the Universidade de Sao Paulo

Although we may contract a mini-bus to provide transportation between the hotels and the University, visitors may also want to get there by themselves. The best way to go to the Astronomy Department is to use the public bus system.

From the Golden Tower Hotel, walk to Rua Cardeal Arcoverde and look for the bus stop near No. 2010. Board the bus line 177P-10, and stop at the Escola Politécnica (also widely know as simply "Poli"). Once you arrive at Poli, it's a very short walk to the Astronomy Department of IAG. From the bus stop, cross the avenue and walk one block up the small one-way street alongside the tall, cubic, windowless building (IEE). IAG is the 2-story set of buildings to your right; the entrance is around the corner.

To go back to your hotel from IAG, walk back the small street alongside the cubic building to the bus stop in the avenue. Take the 177H-10 bus, and stop at the second bus stop on Rua Teodoro Sampaio. Your hotel is a very short walk from there.

Important information for Spanish citizens

Ciudadanos españoles

Desde el día 2 de abril de 2012, las autoridades de control migratorio del Departamento de Policía Federal de Brasil exigen los siguientes requisitos para la entrada de turistas españoles en territorio brasileño:

  1. Pasaporte en vigor (mínimo 6 meses)
  2. Billete aéreo de ida y vuelta (la fecha de regreso debe estar ya confirmada)
  3. Comprobante de medios económicos suficientes para manutención durante la estancia en Brasil. El valor mínimo corresponde a R$170 (ciento setenta reales)- aproximadamente 80€ (ochenta euros) al día, que deberán ser comprobados mediante presentación de tarjeta de crédito y su última factura, para verificación del límite.
  4. En caso de hospedaje en hotel: documento comprobatorio de reserva ya pagada o garantizada del hotel o;
  5. En caso de hospedaje en residencia particular: carta de invitación de un particular residente en la ciudad brasileña de destino, informando el plazo de estancia del turista español, con firma del declarante compulsada en notario brasileño (cartorio), acompañada de comprobación de residencia emitido a nombre del declarante.

Estas medidas únicamente se aplican a turistas.

Podrá solicitarse una única prórroga de estancia para turistas por otros 90 días adicionales. Su concesión es un acto potestativo de la Policía Federal, que la autoriza o no atendiendo a las circunstancias de cada caso particular.

Viajes de negocios - Cuando el motivo del viaje sea de negocios, deberán presentarse en Inmigración documentos que permitan comprobar las actividades que serán desarrolladas como tales durante la estancia en Brasil, con una carta de la empresa que envía y/o carta de las empresas que se vayan a visitar (incluyendo clientes, contactos en Brasil, etc). En el caso de que no fuera posible acreditar la condición del viaje como viaje de negocios, se recibirá el mismo tratamiento que los turistas (ver punto anterior).
