Brazilian Center for Research in Physics: The Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF) is an institute of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil. Located in the Urca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, CBPF develops activities in basic science, technology research and promotion of science to the general public. Its scientific productivity is one of the largest in the country. In 2013, CBPF was ranked by Scimago, the science evaluation resource that assesses universities and research-focused institutions worldwide, as the number one Brazilian institution in quality research and international collaboration. CBPF hosts Labnano (Laboratory for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology), and is one of the most well equipped experimental centers in the country, with various multi-user laboratories, open to the community. The institution has a strong social outreach, hosting various programs geared toward students and teachers from public schools.

Food: About the eateries – The Rio Sul Mall, the oldest in Rio) has a large variety of options (http://www.riosul.com.br/shopping_ondecomer.php) and is located 5 min walking distance from CBPF. By taxi there are a very large number of eating options 5-15 min away in Leme, Copacabana, Urca, Botafogo and Flamengo.
Tourist attractions near-by: The Sugar Loaf (Pao de Acucar) is 15 min walking distance from CBPF (http://www.bondinho.com.br). Copacabana beach is 20 min walking distance.
Hotel Information
The hotel we usually recommend for conferences in Copacabana and have a discount at is the Copacabana-Mar - (330 Reals/day including breakfast).
Please send us an e-mail if there is a chance you will use that hotel so that I have an idea of how many rooms to block. When booking, please mention that you are coming to a conference at the National Observatory in Rio and that Simone/Olivia at reservations are aware of the discount price.

Travel info
A normal taxi from the International Airport (GIG), should cost no more than 80 Reals and it is the recommended way to get to the South Region (which includes Urca). Bus line 2018 also connects the airport with the South Region and costs just 14.65 reals, but it easily takes two hours to do this itinerary because of the traffic, so we do not recommend it.
Santos Dumond domestic airport is pretty close to Copacabana and a normal taxi should cost no more than 35 reals. Same bus line as before, 2018, connects this airport with Copacabana. It normally takes about 40 minutes and the price is 14.65 reals.
From Copacabana-Mar hotel it would take about 5-10 min by taxi to CBPF and it is a 2 km walk.
